The 49ers traded pick No. 67 for a 2018 second-rounder and No. 229 in the seventh-round this year. Pick No. 67 was originally obtained last night from the Bears. GM John Lynch now owns an extra second and third rounder in 2018.

Foster’s introductory press conference featured a two minute long story about him hanging up on the Saints last night, right before the 49ers traded back into the first round with the Seahawks. Solomon Thomas was polite and gave solid answers, but it was Foster who stole the show recalling his phone call with New Orleans, who thought they had picked him at No. 32.

Former GM Trent Baalke signed Vance McDonald to a lucrative contract extension last December. In his first four NFL seasons, McDonald has 64 catches, 866 yards, 7 touchdowns. The timing of the extension was criticized, especially because the 49ers were in the midst of a 13-game losing streak and firings were imminent.

There will be more tough decisions on Friday, when rounds two and three will go down in Philadelphia. Lynch has shored up major parts of the front seven, but there are still several other needs to address with the team’s nine remaining draft picks. Don’t rule out San Francisco trading back into the second round.

A week ago when reports surfaced about his shoulder, Foster’s agent did his best to clear things up on Twitter. Foster underwent the rotator cuff surgery in February and was given a four month timetable to recover. He reportedly played through the pain during the end of the season for the Crimson Tide.

The Giants re-assembled the same roster in the hopes that the key cogs would produce better numbers than they did in 2016. So far, the bats and the Giants are proving the old adage that hope, sadly, is not a strategy.

Lynch was labeled as inexperienced, but none of that showed on Thursday. People around the league were impressed with the groceries the first-time GM is bringing home, and honestly, some are downright jealous of what he pulled off.

Foster is setting the standards high for himself. He wants to be the next Patrick Willis, a 7-time Pro Bowler and borderline Hall of Fame player for the 49ers. Foster certainly is bringing a confidence and swagger this San Francisco locker room has been missing since Jim Harbaugh left in 2014.

For the third season in a row, the San Francisco 49ers have selected a versatile defensive lineman in the first round of the NFL Draft.
