What was supposed to be yet another moribund Thursday night matchup pitting the rebuilding 49ers against a Los Angeles Rams franchise that can’t sell tickets turned into a 41-39 back-and-forth affair that was reminiscent of a Big 12 shootout or a “Pac-12 After Dark” special worth watching until the final moment.
It shouldn’t make the 49ers’ loss any easier to take, especially considering the team’s defense surrendered more points on Thursday than it did in its first two games combined, losing to the Rams does prove just how much work Kyle Shanahan has ahead of him before he can toast to his first victory.

Thursday night games are notoriously difficult for NFL players dealing with injuries, but a handful of San Francisco 49ers’ players are going to attempt to play through lingering pain this week.
Former Super Bowl winning head coach and 49ers assistant Mike Holmgren joined Gary & Larry on Thursday before San Francisco’s game against the Rams, and said that as long as they can protect him, he believes Beathard would benefit most from playing right now.
Even the most apathetic fan of the 49ers and Los Angeles Rams understand their team’s recent woes. Yet, if anyone is going to turn these disheartened franchises around, its their promising new head coaches, Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay.
