In the top half of the seventh inning on Saturday evening, Giants’ pitcher Madison Bumgarner had a chance to alter the outcome of the game with his bat. It didn’t end well for the Giants.

Entering Saturday evening’s matchup between the Giants and Diamondbacks at Chase Field, San Francisco’s offense had scored two runs or fewer in six of ace Madison Bumgarner’s 12 starts this season.

After an impressive showing in his rookie season in 2016, right-hander Derek Law was expected to serve as a set-up man toward the back-end of the Giants’ bullpen this year. And though Law carried a sub-3.00 earned run average into the final week of May, his season blew up in a span of just four weeks.

The franchise’s first round draft choice back in 2012 has registered back-to-back scoreless outings, which includes a start in which he registered 6.2 innings and 10 strikeouts against the National League East-leading Washington Nationals.

Though a Giants pitching staff that ranks 17th in the Major Leagues in earned run average hasn’t aided the franchise’s cause this season, San Francisco’s lineup was unable to keep the club afloat during the first half of the season.

Though San Francisco’s pitching staff kept the Diamondbacks from scoring over the game’s final six innings, the Giants’ offense didn’t muster enough runs to overcome a Paul Goldschmidt home run in a 4-3 series-opening loss.

On Friday night, Buster Posey was penciled into manager Bruce Bochy’s lineup as the starting first baseman, and prior to the Giants’ matchup with the Diamondbacks, Bochy said he plans on starting Posey at first base again on Sunday.

The San Francisco Giants have their starting second baseman back.
