Cory Gearrin lost his perfect batting average, but what he gained on Tuesday night was a whole lot more meaningful. The Giants’ reliever threw three innings of scoreless ball in San Francisco’s 4-3 14-inning walkoff win over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, and Gearrin was the pitcher who made it all possible.

The San Francisco Giants already had one third baseman make his Major League debut, and the team is well on its way to having another player receive a call-up to the big leagues. 29-year-old South Korean infielder Jae-Gyun Hwang is on his way up from AAA Sacramento, and Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy said the team plans to start Hwang at third base against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.

The Giants are reportedly calling up third baseman Jae-gyun Hwang from AAA Sacramento ahead of the July 1 opt-out date he had in his contract if he didn’t get called up to the bigs by then.

“There’s going to be no room for the young guys on the 40 man roster if they don’t start selling. I think if they really feel out of it and they think they can get the type of prospects they want for Johnny Cueto [and] Eduardo Nunez…then they might as well do it. So if they do feel the need to bring up these young guys and give them a shot, the only way to do so is to clear room on the 40 man roster and trade for prospects.”
