In Cain’s four previous seasons he had a losing record, an ERA no better than 4, pitched over 90 innings in just one of those seasons, and set a new career low in WAR consecutively in each of the past four years. It seemed like persistent injuries to the 3-time All-Star had taken some velocity off of his pitches, his fastball in particular, and hampered his ability to pitch deep into games and be a workhorse pitcher for the Giants.

When the Giants handed Matt Cain a 5 year 112,500,000 contract in 2012, the team thought it was locking down a perennial Cy Young award contender who would likely add to his three All-Star appearances over the length of the contract. Instead Cain has been limited by injuries and inconsistency with four consecutive losing seasons and a new career-low WAR in each of those seasons.

After bouncing back from a disasterly road trip, the Giants turned in their best homestand on the year, going 5-2 and taking series wins from Cincinnati and Los Angeles.

Clayton Kershaw delivered seven innings of three-hit ball and the Dodgers offense tagged Johnny Cueto for five runs as Los Angeles avoided the sweep and snapped San Francisco’s five-game winning streak.

The benches cleared in the 3rd inning of Wednesday’s game between the Giants and Dodgers. Johnny Cueto allowed a two-run double to Yasmani Grandal in the 1st inning, and after Grandal flew out to end the 3rd, the two began to exchange words. The benches subsequently emptied.

Ty Blach shut down the Dodgers last night with seven innings pitched and just one run allowed. In an interview with The Audible on Wednesday morning, Blach talked about what’s keyed his career success against the Dodgers.

After a brief stint on the DL, Mark Melancon is expected to return to the Giants before Wednesday’s game against Los Angeles. Melancon has been out since May 9 with a mild pronator strain.
