After the San Francisco Giants made their first cuts of spring training, here’s a look at who could possibly see their names on the 25-man roster to open up the season.
Belt is often maligned by Giants fans despite his typically impressive raw numbers, specifically targeted for being prone to stretches of inconsistency. With that in mind, Belt was asked by former Giant Kevin Frandsen what adjustment he plans on making at the plate in 2018, and the veteran first baseman gave an interesting answer.
The Giants made their first big move of the offseason on Wednesday morning, acquiring three-time All-Star 3B Evan Longoria in a trade that send both Christian Arroyo and Denard Span to Tampa Bay. Though Longoria wasn’t exactly a world beater at the plate in 2016, he is at the very worst an above average third baseman, and now gives the Giants solid players at every infield position.
A five-time All-Star and the Giants’ most consistent offensive player, Posey finished the season hitting .320 with an on-base percentage of .400, but he hit just 12 home runs and drove in just 67 runs.
Following their disastrous 2017, the Giants are in a difficult spot heading into the offseason. The core that led them to three World Series championships is taking up a large part of the payroll they may want to use to pull themselves out of this slump.
