No pitcher in Major League history has started as many games against the Colorado Rockies as Matt Cain. At this point in his career, Cain’s pitch charts against the Rockies’ lineup could be archived in the Library of Congress, as Colorado hitters entered Tuesday evening’s game having combined for more than 150 at-bats against the 13th-year veteran.

Monday was supposed to be the day the Giants were lowered down into their grave. The old saying goes, “Hitting is contagious.” If that’s the case, then slumps are too. For the second straight day and the fourth time in a five-game homestand, the San Francisco Giants failed to tally more than a pair of runs in Wednesday’s 7-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals.

On Wednesday, San Francisco Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy said the left field position has been a “black hole” for his ball club. Perhaps rookie Austin Slater took those words to heart, as the Giants’ rookie left fielder launched his first career home run in the top half of the fourth inning of Thursday’s ballgame.

The Giants will be playing without outfielder Denard Span Monday night. Span was scratched from the lineup due to soreness in his left hand.

Denard Span collected four hits in five at-bats in his first game back from injury on Thursday night, but the Giants left him on base three times in a 3-2 loss to the Reds.

Thursday Denard Span will be back in the lineup for the San Francisco Giants after spending two weeks on the DL.

Both Brandon Crawford and Denard Span are expected to be activated from the 10-day disabled list before tonight’s game. Crawford (groin) and Span (shoulder) have both been out since mid-April.
