It took the horrific killing of another unarmed black man at the hands of a white police officer, and two weeks of subsequent protests, for the NFL to finally say publicly that they support peaceful protests from their players.

Jed York announced over the weekend that the 49ers would donate $1 million to “local and national organizations who are creating change.”

“They told me it was what was best for the team. I disagreed.”

On Wednesday, the NFL announced it had partnered with Jay-Z and his company, Roc Nation, for a deal centered around music and social justice initiatives in the NFL. There was a clear missing element of the deal: Colin Kaepernick.

It turns out the grievance settlements aren’t as lucrative as originally expected.

The 49ers head coach doesn’t think Eric Reid would be interested in a backup role.
