The Giants had the opportunity to shake up their outfield on Thursday evening as San Francisco activated 28-year-old Jarrett Parker from the 60-day disabled list. That shake up, however, didn’t take place.

Less than an hour after the Giants fell a season-high 27 games under .500 with a 6-1 loss to the Oakland A’s, San Francisco elected to overhaul its depth at the third base position.

As the Giants finally take a deep breath and allow themselves to regroup after a devastating first half of the season, nearly every player on the team will use the All-Star break to relax and reflect. That isn’t the case for Madison Bumgarner, though.

On the same day the Giants honored their left fielder of the past, Barry Bonds, by unveiling a plaque featuring Bonds on the Wall of Fame outside of AT&T Park, San Francisco received harsh news about its potential left fielder of the future. On Saturday evening, Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy learned that rookie left fielder Austin Slater tore the adductor muscle in his right hip, which could keep Slater out of the lineup for the remainder of the regular season.

The Mac is back. After Giants’ left fielder Austin Slater re-aggravated a hip flexor injury on Friday evening, San Francisco placed the rookie on the 10-day disabled list and recalled outfielder Mac Williamson from AAA Sacramento.

From 1993 to 2007, a remarkable 15-year stretch, left field in San Francisco was a mine that never ran out of gold. The jackpot Barry Bonds, the greatest home run hitter in the history of Major League baseball, provided the Giants organization was akin to the one the most successful gold miners found in California back in the late 1840s. But as the miners –and the Giants– would eventually learn, every well dries up, and only those who adapt are able to forge on successfully.

The Giants’ recent struggles can be traced directly to their inability to put together consistent at-bats at the plate, but that doesn’t mean the team is solely focused on improving its hitting. On Wednesday, manager Bruce Bochy indicated the team is closer to having ace Madison Bumgarner on the hill as Bumgarner continues to progress from a shoulder injury suffered in late April.

There is one sinking similarity linking the San Francisco Giants to the Cleveland Browns, and it’s that for all the struggles the Browns have had in finding a quarterback over the last decade, the Giants have had just as difficult of a time honing in on a full-time left fielder.
