The 49ers enter the 2018 season with high expectations after capping the 2017 season on a five-game winning streak. Which players have the most to prove?
While cornerback was arguably the 49ers’ weakest position heading into the offseason, safety might be one of their strongest. Jaquiski Tartt was ranked as one of the top safeties in the league last year according to Pro Football Focus, before suffering a broken arm that ended his season in Week 9. Rookie Adrian Colbert also had an impressive season in six starts filling in for Tartt, with a hard-hitting mentality that had to make his general manager smile.
Defensive back Jimmie Ward was the 49ers’ first-round draft pick in 2014. It’s a fact that’s easy to forget, considering he’s only once played all 16 games in a season, and only appeared in seven games during 2017 before he was knocked out with a broken forearm.
General manager John Lynch took care of a few other items of business this week, adding an offensive lineman as well as a cornerback to the team’s 53-man roster.
Thursday night games are notoriously difficult for NFL players dealing with injuries, but a handful of San Francisco 49ers’ players are going to attempt to play through lingering pain this week.
