It wasn’t exactly a secret that 49ers’ safety Jimmie Ward would be out of the lineup for the team’s season opener against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Now, it’s official.

Four days before the 49ers opened their 2017 season against the Carolina Panthers, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced all of the starters he was confident in revealing. The list is as follows: Quarterback Brian Hoyer and left tackle Joe Staley.

After being out of action all preseason with a hamstring injury, Jimmie Ward was taken off the physically-unable-to-perform list last week and rejoined the 49ers in practice for the first time the beginning of training camp. On Sunday night before the team’s third preseason game, Ward was worried his time off the injury report might be short lived.

Two players that the 49ers expect big things from on the defensive end – DeForest Buckner and Jimmie Ward – have missed time due to injury, and are working their way back to full strength before the September 10 season opener versus the Carolina Panthers.

Ward mostly lined up as the nickel back in his first two seasons under Jim Harbaugh and Jim Tomsula, before switching to cornerback under Chip Kelly last season. Now, with Kyle Shanahan and defensive coordinator Robert Saleh holding the reins, Ward is being prepared to play the free-safety role for the first time in his professional career.

On Wednesdaythe 49ers announced that the team had activated Jimmie Ward off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list after Ward participated in workouts on Monday and Tuesday.

The San Francisco 49ers today announced that the DB has been placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List. This comes one day after general manager John Lynch told reporters that the team would enter camp without anybody on that list.
