Giants CEO Larry Baer joined Buster Posey and Joe Panik on the stage at FanFest on Saturday, and was asked about the club’s incredibly active offseason after losing 98 games in 2017.
The San Francisco Giants agreed to terms with all five of their arbitration-eligible players on Friday afternoon, meaning each player on the team’s 40-man roster now has a set salary for the 2018 season.
The Giants made their first big move of the offseason on Wednesday morning, acquiring three-time All-Star 3B Evan Longoria in a trade that send both Christian Arroyo and Denard Span to Tampa Bay. Though Longoria wasn’t exactly a world beater at the plate in 2016, he is at the very worst an above average third baseman, and now gives the Giants solid players at every infield position.
Up until Monday afternoon, Giants’ prospect Christian Arroyo was one of the franchise’s few young assets who had yet to be mentioned as a candidate to be swapped for Miami Marlins’ slugger Giancarlo Stanton.
Last week, Craig Mish of Sirius XM in South Florida reported that the Giants had made an official trade offer to the Marlins for NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton. That offer apparently included second baseman Joe Panik, as well as Tyler Beade and Chris Shaw, the teams’ No. 2 and 3 prospects respectively.
According to Clark Spencer of The Miami Herald, the Giants now know the combination of prospects the Miami Marlins are interested in if the two sides are able to pull off a deal.
