A pair of solo home runs were the only run production for the Giants on Thursday night, as the Reds picked up a 3-2 victory with some late inning offense. Pinch-hitter Scooter Gennett led off the eighth with a triple and came around to score later in the inning. Denard Span went 4-5 with a home run in his return from injury for the Giants.

Thursday Denard Span will be back in the lineup for the San Francisco Giants after spending two weeks on the DL.

Bruce Bochy said Mark Melancon should be ready to come off the DL when eligible on Tuesday, May 16. Melancon has a mild pronator strain in his throwing arm, but Bochy said if it was September, Melancon would likely be pitching.

Both Brandon Crawford and Denard Span are expected to be activated from the 10-day disabled list before tonight’s game. Crawford (groin) and Span (shoulder) have both been out since mid-April.

The Giants are back home for a four-game set against the Reds and three games against the rival Dodgers. San Francisco went 2-4 in six games against the two teams last week, including a three-game sweep against the Reds in which they outscored the Giants 31-5.

The Giants are in desperate need of a left fielder, but according to ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian, the Giants lack the prospect depth to make any moves. Giants left fielders have hit just two home runs combined this season.

The Giants came back from a late deficit with a four-run ninth inning to take down the Mets on Wednesday afternoon. After a scare in the bottom of the ninth, the Giants held on to win 6-5 and snap a five-game losing streak.
