It took nearly a week for Major League Baseball to reach a verdict on Giants’ reliever Hunter Strickland’s suspension appeal, but on Monday, Strickland learned his appeal was denied. Strickland was suspended for six games on May 30 after hitting Nationals’ outfielder Bryce Harper with a 98-mile per hour fastball in the Giants’ 3-0 loss on May 29. After the pitch, Harper charged the mound, leading to a benches-clearing brawl between the two clubs.

We join Murph and Mac in the studio to talk the San Francisco Giants and their recent struggles. The Giants are stuck at the bottom of the NL West with a record of 26-45, trailing only the Philadelphia Phillies for the worst record in baseball.

“Everybody is looking around going, ‘Hey we’re supposed to be better than this, how are we finding new ways to lose?’ Yesterday’s loss, I gotta be honest with you, I didn’t see it coming. I thought it was going to be a very spirited comeback, which it was. It was a remarkable comeback. Then lo and behold, 15 minutes later it all unfolds in just the most unbelievable way. It really was unbelievable.”

It’s the middle of June, and already, the Giants don’t have much to play for. Less than halfway through the season, rare is the day when Giants players can wake up in the morning and head to the park with a sense of urgency, as the chance to play “must-win” ballgames will elude them in 2017.

Hunter Pence and the Giants were in the final stages of authoring a dramatic Father’s Day story. But for a team that hasn’t written many fairytales or happy endings, Sunday wasn’t exactly a start.

The Colorado Rockies are in first place in the National League West, and after the weekend, there should be a large pile of thank you notes mailed back to 24 Willie Mays Plaza in San Francisco. The upstart Rockies lead the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks by 1.0 game in the division, and they have the Giants’ struggles to thank for their current status as the front-runners.

The Giants have a case of the blues, and it sure is showing. A team that began the day 17.5 games out of first place in the National League West looked so downtrodden, it was only fitting the orange and black took the field with blue caps in a 5-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies, their fifth consecutive defeat.

Giants’ catcher Buster Posey wasn’t healthy enough to run the bases on Friday night. But the team’s best hitter still managed to put a scare in Rockies’ closer Greg Holland. A night after exiting Thursday’s game with a sore ankle, Posey pinch-hit for Kelby Tomlinson in the top half of the ninth inning with the Giants hoping to mount a rally.

In the top half of the fifth inning at Coors Field on Friday evening, pitcher Jeff Samardzija played the starring role in a comedy, as his two-run home run gave his Giants’ teammates a good laugh and gave San Francisco a 4-1 lead. Fifteen minutes later, Samardzija was the protagonist in a tragedy, as he followed up the home run by surrendering five runs in the bottom half of the fifth, continuing the Giants’ season of misery in their 10-7 loss to the Colorado Rockies.
